Surfing Saved My Life

Surfing Saved My Life – A Positive Change Story is dedicated to helping people gain useful skills and insights, build their innate resilience and experience more of the passions that get them stoked, so they can be the best version of themselves and create great things in the world.

“In the ocean of life, there will always be waves.
To gain happiness, we need to learn how to surf!”

Share the stoke - save some lives

Surfing Saved My Life (SSML) is about my lived experience with depression and bipolar disorder and how surfing helped me keep it together when my life fell apart. SSML’s goal is to share that story and let others know: you’re not alone. There is a way forward.

Today more than ever, we need to create greater mutual understanding and have conversations that, while not easy, have to happen in order for lasting change to occur. And for lives to be saved.

SSML’s three main aims are to: 1) promote informed conversations about positive mental health practice, 2) empower people to develop and expand their innate resilience to better manage not only acute distress but life’s everyday stressors, and 3) provide the latest information and research to educate people who experience mental health distress, whether their own or that of others.

A lot of good work has been done in recent years to raise awareness of mental health issues and begin to reduce the stigma attached to them. Yet many people who are in distress still struggle to raise a hand and say, “I’m not OK. I need help.”

At the same time, I’ve spoken to lots of people who would like to be able to help, but hold back for fear of saying or doing the ‘wrong thing.’ There is a clear need for people to learn how to extend a hand to someone in need and say, “It’s OK to not be OK. I’m here to help,” and be confident that they have the skills to do so.

Surfing taught me that identifying and doing the things you are passionate about is a vital way to build resilience and increase your overall life happiness. Passion is doubly beneficial: it makes life even better when things are going well and it helps you get through life’s stormy times.

Of course you don’t have to be a surfer to join the SSML journey! Surfing is just one of many passions; it’s also true that, as important as passion is, it’s just one part of the story.

That’s why I’ve combined the lessons learned in the process of rebuilding my life with my 20+ years of training and professional experience to create the Positive Change framework. I hope you’ll join us and find out more!
